Surely you have already come across some simple German phrases. Whether in class, in advertising or in everyday conversations – they are a dime a dozen.
Linguistic phrases contribute enormously to language comprehension and linguistic ability to act, but they presuppose an advanced language level. Like the Chinese chengyu, German idioms contain everyday cultural knowledge and provide insights into traditional thinking. They give life, humour and poetry to the language.
Our next Virtual German Corner will follow the motto “All beginnings are difficult”. Together we will take a closer look at a few proverbial expressions in German and consider their possible meanings.
