Have you ever heard of Thomas Derksen? No? But definitely Afu – that’s the nickname under which Thomas became probably the best-known German influencer in China.
Afu originally comes from the tranquil North Rhine-Westphalian town of Marienheide near Cologne, where he trained as a bank clerk after graduating from high school. His subsequent studies in East Asian economics and politics and Chinese led him to Shanghai, 8,219 kilometers away – a trip that would change his life forever!
In Shanghai, Afu not only got to know and love his wife Liping, but also her extended family, including her parents, uncles, aunts, family friends… Getting to know Liping’s father in particular brought one or two challenges and surprises for both of them, which Afu recounts in his popular videos and his two books in a humorous and loving way.
We are delighted to welcome Afu to our Goethe-Language Centre at SISU on 24 November, where he will read to us from his first book “Und täglich grüßt der Tigervater – Als deutscher Schwiegersohn in China” and will be available to answer questions from the audience. The event will be moderated by Silva Jährling, Director of SISU Goethe.
